A Clinical Study of Topical Minoxidil Therapy in Male Pattern Baldness and Alopecia Areata

Abstract
42 patients were treated with topical applications of 2% minoxidil solution and placebo, two times daily for 6 months. The effect was assessed by the appearance of vellus hairs or terminal hairs on the previously bald areas.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. 19 to 25 patients(76%) with a male pattern ,baldness noted hair regrowth, which was statistically significant compared to 6 patients treated with placebo.
2. 7 to 9 patients(78%) with alopecia areata noted hair regrowth, which was statistically significant compared to 2 patients treated with placebo.
3. During the treatment, none of the subjects showed the systemic or local side effects.
From the above results, we conclude that topical 2% minoxidil solution was significantly more effective than the placebo in male pattern baldness and alopecia areata.
